United States expels 15 diplomats from Cuban Embassy in Washington

The US administration is worrying about its diplomatic staff in Cuba, the mysterious "sonic attacks" became a reason for an expelling of 15 Cuban diplomats from Washington.

The US government on Tuesday ordered 15 Cuban Embassy diplomats to leave the country in response to the alleged acoustic attacks targeting American diplomats in Cuba.

"I think the conversations have focused on the Cuban government's responsibility to ensure the safety and well being of diplomatic personnel that they host in their country, " the officials said.

Since the start of the illnesses, the administration of President Donald Trumphas stopped issuing visas to Cuban citizens hoping to visit the United States and issued a travel warning to US citizens visiting Cuba. Affected individuals have exhibited a range of physical symptoms including ear complaints and hearing loss, dizziness, headache, fatigue, cognitive issues, and difficulty sleeping.

The United States has ordered the expulsion of 15 Cuban diplomats from the country after removing 60 per cent of its staff from its embassy in Havana. But no such devices were found and the U.S. Embassy in Havana no longer considers that a likely cause.

The US restored formal ties in 2015 with Havana after more than half a century.

USA officials said they are convinced someone has been targeting the diplomats and they are investigating whether some type of sonic weapon could have been used in the attacks.

Cuba, the United States and Canada have investigated the attacks, but the probes have not yielded any answers about how they were carried out or who was responsible.

"The more we escalate tensions with Cuba, the harder it will be to solve this mystery", said Daniel Erikson, a Latin America specialist in the Obama White House and now a managing director of Blue Star Strategies, a consulting firm.

Twenty-one US diplomats have suffered various physical ailments from the attacks, acknowledging the nature remains unknown as well as the perpetrators.

Shifty Maria could prompt storm watch here by tomorrow
The hurricane claimed the lives of 30 people in the Caribbean, including at least 15 people in the small island Dominica. Panovich says by the time it reaches the Outer Banks, Maria should either be a weak hurricane or a strong tropical storm.

The State Department will make an official announcement as early as Tuesday, The Miami Herald reported, citing three sources familiar with the matter.

USA officials had previously refrained from calling it "attacks", instead using the vague language of "incidents".

"This move does not signal a change of policy or determination of responsibility for the attacks on US government personnel in Cuba".

When Americans started falling ill a year ago in Havana, the victims of eerie, invisible attacks, investigators seized on a key question: Who had the motive to drive the United States and Cuba apart?

"Cuba has never perpetrated, nor will it ever perpetrate attacks of any sort against diplomatic officials or their relatives", Rodríguez Parrilla said at a news conference in Havana. Pressed on this point, the State Department official said it was Cuba's responsibility under global law to ensure the wellbeing of US diplomatic personnel, and not on the United States to outline criteria.

But the USA soon discovered that actual diplomats at the embassy had also been hit by similar attacks, officials said, further confounding the search for a culprit and a motive. The Cuban government has repeatedly denied having played a role in the attacks and launched its own investigation into the incidents.

"We are evaluating the impact of the reduction of personnel on these services but the secretary's focus is on the safety and well-being of the diplomatic personnel", the official said.

The official also said that the American diplomats the U.S.is withdrawing from its embassy in Havana will be out of Cuba by the end of this week. We need to be smart and thoughtful in responding to these attacks.

"Regarding the attacks, there are now 22 persons medically confirmed to have experienced health effects due to the attacks on diplomatic personnel in Havana".
