Massive Yosemite Rock Fall Kills Climber on Anniversary Climbing Date With Wife

Massive Yosemite Rock Fall Kills Climber on Anniversary Climbing Date With Wife

Park officials say rock falls overall have killed 16 people since 1857 and injured more than 100.

Park spokesman Scott Gediman says the size of this rockfall is not unusual, in fact, its size compares with other rockfalls in the area.

The couple, from Cardiff, who were celebrating their first wedding anniversary, had not even left base camp when the 131ft by 65ft piece of granite tore away from the Yosemite National Park attraction and crushed the experienced climber.

Following Wednesday's fatal rock slide, a second and larger rock fall occurred on Thursday, injuring a man and coating the Yosemite Valley in a huge dust cloud.

The last time a climber was killed by a rock falling at Yosemite was in 2013, when a Montana climber fell after a rock dislodged and sliced his climbing rope.

These climbers snapped photos from above during the incident.

"We'll all be thinking about it, that it's there, but it's in our nature to climb", he said.

El Capitan, a granite monolith that stands at 3,000 feet, endured another fall the next day that totaled 30,500 tons.

North Korea Says Sanctions Will Only Speed Up Nuclear Programme
The country's main partner is China and it is considered partially responsible for an estimated economic growth past year . Instead, he said, the worldwide community should strictly implement the sanctions imposed on North Korea by the U.N.

"It was more significant than anything I've seen before", DeGrazio said.

Yosemite National Park identified the man Thursday as Andrew Foster, 32.

Peter Zabrok's party shot this video from immediately above the slide just moments after it took place.

"I am a scientist, so I won't rule it out entirely", Stock said.

Park officials say rocks at the world-renowned park's climbing routes break loose and crash down about 80 times a year, but injuries are rare.

Two people were injured and one died in a series of rockfalls Wednesday that displaced an estimated 1,300 tons. The largest of the rocks that fell was about 40m tall (about the height of a 12-storey building), 20m wide, and about 3m thick at its widest point, according to a Yosemite release.

"It's kind of an inherently unsafe sport", Hayden Jamieson, 24, of Mammoth Lakes, California, said as he prepared to head up El Capitan early Saturday.

Gediman says the two were hiking at the bottom of El Capitan's vertical face in preparation on their way to scale it when the rock fell.
