Man Arrested In Edmonton Terror Attack

Man Arrested In Edmonton Terror Attack

The 30-year-old man was detained after a high-speed chase through streets filled with Saturday night revellers and local football fans.

Edmonton in #Canada was the scene of a terror attack in which an Islamic State group flag was found inside a vehicle believed to have been involved in the incident.

The attack began Saturday shortly after 8 p.m. (10 p.m. ET), when the a Chevy Malibu drove into a police officer stationed outside a Canadian Football League game, sending him flying 15 feet into the air, Edmonton police said.

Hours later, a man driving a rental van was pulled over at a checkpoint after his name on documents seemed "very similar" to the one police were looking for.

Knecht says the driver of the vehicle then got out and "viciously" stabbed the officer several times with a knife before fleeing.

"The U-Haul truck then immediately fled the scene, and was pursued by police officers toward downtown Edmonton", the police chief said. The van struck four pedestrians before hitting a wall and flipping on its side. The suspect then jumped out of the vehicle, stabbed him and fled the scene, police said.

Chief Knecht says police believe the man taken into custody "acted alone, although investigation is in its early stages".

Investigators believe the incident near Commonwealth Stadium and subsequent attempts to injure pedestrians in downtown Edmonton may be related.

Trump waives Jones Act shipping restrictions for hurricane-battered Puerto Rico
In Washington Thursday, House Democrats called for immediate legislation to assist Puerto Rico and the U.S. By waiving the Jones Act, the USA will allow for more rapid delivery of aid to Puerto Rico.

Although police have described the incident as a suspected terrorist act, terrorism charges have not been laid. The Islamic State, which has lost most of its territory in Syria and Iraq in recent months, asserted responsibility for the European assaults.

Its terror threat level remained at medium, where it has been since late 2014.

The van "peeled" into an alley where people were smoking, he said.

The RCMP's "K" Division Integrated National Security Enforcement Team (K-INSET) is leading the investigation with the assistance of the Edmonton Police Service.

"We can not - and will not - let violent extremism take root in our communities". "It just came around the corner, ripping".

"We didn't have sufficient evidence to warrant continued investigation of that individual following the 2015 (check)", he said.

Alberta premier Rachel Notley last night tweeted to wish the injured officer a "speedy recovery". "I thought at first he was pulling over for the cops coming by, but he was clearly the one they were chasing".
