Iran, Iraq forces to hold joint border drills after Kurd vote

Iran, Iraq forces to hold joint border drills after Kurd vote

The holding of the referendum triggered a crisis in Erbil-Baghdad relations and made the central Iraqi government adopt tight measures to reclaim Iraq's sovereignty, including a ban on global flights to Kurdistan's airports.

Pressure on Iraq's Kurdistan region mounted on Wednesday along with the announcement of official results in a non-binding referendum that showed 92.73 percent of voters backed statehood.

It has since suspended all flights to and from Iraqi Kurdistan and warned that all border agreements will be nullified, although border crossings are still open.

Iraqi troops are now stationed in Turkey and Iran and will reportedly soon start controlling who goes in and who comes out of Kurdish-controlled areas, the Associated Press reports.

The day before, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan threatened the Iraqi Kurds with economic sanctions, adding that "military options" are also on the table.

The Iraqi Kurdish independence referendum has taken focus away from the war against the Islamic State group, the spokesman for the US-led coalition against the jihadists said on Thursday.

Turkey has also condemned the vote, saying it was "unacceptable", and has made threats to stop the supply of oil to the Kurdish region of northern Iraq.

North Korea's weakest nuclear test, its first one, conducted in 2006, generated a magnitude 4.3 tremor. According to its website, the first quake - with a 2.6 magnitude occurred at 12:43 a.m.

On Saturday, Erdogan said Iraqi Kurdistan "will pay a price" for the "unacceptable" referendum, without elaborating.

Kurdistan is a autonomous region in northern Iraq. That's due to tensions over an independence referendum held this week in Iraq's Kurdish region and disputed territories.

State carrier Qatar Airways was just the latest airline to announce all flights to and from the Kurdish region would be cancelled starting tomorrow.

Northern Iraq's Kurdish Regional Government (KRG) has called on the federal government in Baghdad and the United Nations to lift an air embargo imposed on the Kurdish region following this week's illegitimate independence referendum.

The referendum has stirred fears of a new regional conflict.

Worldwide flights were indefinitely suspended from Erbil and Sulaimaniya airports in Iraqi Kurdistan at 6 p.m. Friday (11 a.m. ET) by order of the Iraqi Civil Aviation Authority.
