Google Removes Calorie Count Feature After People Accuse App of 'Shaming' Them

Google Removes Calorie Count Feature After People Accuse App of 'Shaming' Them

The feature, which was actually meant to encourage exercise in the form walking and discourage driving, also shows users how many mini cupcakes they would burn from their walk.

For example, if a walk is going to burn 400 calories, Google Maps would show that you're going to burn off nearly 4 mini cupcakes.

Apparently daring to compare burning off calories to the consumption of innocuous, cute cupcakes is cancerous in 2017, with social justice warriors going off their politically correct trees.

Google Maps' calorie count feature was only released to select iPhone users as part of a limited test, but the outrage it caused led to it being removed in less than 24 hours.

The app tallied calories in confectionary units: one mini cupcake equalling 110 calories.

Donald Trump WILL visit United Kingdom within months as trip finally confirmed
However he will not sleep at Buckingham Palace as the guest of the Queen, and there will not be a glitzy banquet in his honour. There'd been threats of protests if the United States president was given the full VIP treatment.

Simpson further explained that, according to research, individuals with diagnosed eating disorders "tend to be very obsessive about these numbers". It merely appeared on the Google Maps app for some iOS users last week, to the delight of many who said it could help promote a healthier lifestyle.

In a response, Priya Tew, a member of the Association of UK Dietitians, also called the feature "triggering", adding it could make users feel "shamed".

One of the things that has inflamed so many people is Google's way of saying that an average person burns about 90 calories for each mile on foot. However, it does not clarify the standard for an "average" person. Or Google could embellish the feature to take into account details about the user's health, including general factors like age, weight, and gender.

In addition to the potentially harmful side effects of the feature, as the Washington Post points out, Google's measurements of both calories burned and calories per cupcake were questionable.

And although this new Maps feature might sound similar to how some restaurants are required to show calorie counts on menus, this is more aggressive.
