Commitment shown by OKC has been 'off the charts — Paul George

Commitment shown by OKC has been 'off the charts — Paul George

On Friday, ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski reported that Westbrook signed a five-year, $205 million extension with the Thunder.

The Thunder had little choice but to offer Westbrook a maximum five-year extension because the reigning NBA MVP could have become an unrestricted free agent next June.

Until Durant's free-agency flight to Golden State previous year, he and Westbrook were OKC teammates for eight seasons.

It just so happens that reigning MVP and Thunder guard Russell Westbrook is one of those players who can opt to sign an extension on or before October 16.

The Thunder had an impressive offseason, re-signing Westbrook while also trading role players and young pieces to add All-Star forwards Paul George and Carmelo Anthony.

Jun 26, 2017; New York, NY, USA; Oklahoma City Thunder player Russell Westbrook poses for photos with his 2017 NBA most valuable player award during the 2017 NBA Awards at Basketball City at Pier 36. With rumors swirling about Westbrook potentially being swayed to leave in free agency next summer, people were rightfully nervous.

Thyssenkrupp won't be on the hook for Tata Steel pensions - CFO
The deal will require approval of Thyssenkrupp's supervisory board, Tata Steel's board of directors and European regulators. With this deal, both the companies will be able to form a strong number 2 player in the European steel market.

The contract begins with the 2018-19 season, running through the 2022-23 campaign, and gives Westbrook the biggest guaranteed contract in the National Basketball Association. That thought was prevailing around the National Basketball Association, as well, with multiple executives who outsiders thought could have had a shot at Westbrook in free agency believing the nine-year veteran would commit to Oklahoma City for the future. Despite losing in the first round of the playoffs to the Houston Rockets, Westbrook single-handily carried the Thunder to the playoffs in a ferocious Western Conference.

OKC Thunder fans cheer for Russell Westbrook, the saving grace of the organization.

Westbrook now joins two-time MVP Stephen Curry as the only players to have agreed to new contracts valued at $200-plus million. Westbrook was not giving any indication about which direction he was leaning in regards to the contract extension.

While it appears all teams are chasing the defending champion Warriors, the Thunder will pose a unique threat to them.

The timing has many questioning Westbrook's motives.

The deal signed Friday begins with the 2018-2019 season.
