Uber's New 'Good Cop' Tack Will Face Test in City Tussles

Uber's New 'Good Cop' Tack Will Face Test in City Tussles

Uber's new CEO has apologized for the ride-hailing company's conduct in the wake of a decision by a governmental agency to pull Uber's permits to give rides in London.

He referred to a case where an Uber driver was allowed to continue working despite an allegation of sexual assault, leading to another more serious attack on a woman in his auto.

"Even though there is a legal process in place, I have asked (Transport for London) to make themselves available to meet with him", Khan said.

The mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, who had initially accused Uber of responding to the decision with aggressive threats, said he welcomed the apology and supported the idea of talks between the city and the company.

Uber's customers began panicking because this meant as of September 30, the American company will no longer be licensed, but it can continue to operate until all appeals are exhausted.

Mr Khosrowshahi admits in the letter that "we have got things wrong along the way".

Uber's new CEO Dara Khosrowshahi, in a note to employees obtained by The Associated Press, wrote that he disagreed with the decision but it was based on past behavior.

The swift decision leaves the more-than 40,000 Uber drivers in London with only a few days to consider a career change, as the city wastes no time in shutting the service down. London's taxi regulator, Transport for London, announced Friday that Uber's license would not be renewed.

Boston College students attacked with acid in France
Four American tourists who were attacked with acid at a train station in Marseille have been identified as college students. In previous incidents in Marseille, a driver rammed into two bus stops last month , killing a woman, USA Today reported .

"Friendly" (76 per cent) and "helpful" (61 per cent) were also terms used to describe Uber drivers.

London is Uber's biggest market in Europe and considered to be one of the taxi-hailing company's top three markets in terms of revenue.

Now, Dara Khrowshahi, the brand new CEO of Uber, has sent his reply, in the form of an open letter to the Evening Standard.

The decision against Uber prompted a backlash from the 3.5 million Londoners, who have come to enjoy the company's cheap fares. Uber said it will appeal, during which time it can continue operating.

TfL forced 13,000 drivers, many of whom work for Uber, into compulsory, enhanced criminal checks this month as a "precautionary measure".

Fred Jones, Uber's United Kingdom head of cities, said the mayor and TfL had "caved to pressure from a small number of individuals and groups that want to protect the status quo and reduce consumer choice and competition from London".

The initial background checks were carried out by a third party but TfL deemed them inadequate following a review. "As we have already told TfL, an independent review has found that "greyball" has never been used or considered in the United Kingdom for the purposes cited by TfL", he continued, referring to the proprietary technology that allowed Uber to evade authorities and skirt regulations imposed by local and national governments.
