Twitter Reveals Hundreds of Russian-Linked Accounts, Ads

Twitter Reveals Hundreds of Russian-Linked Accounts, Ads

The revelations on Russian's interference in the 2016 election across social platforms have motivated calls for action by lawmakers to impose more regulation of digital advertising. RT spent $274,100 in US ads in 2016, according to Twitter, which said it was still reviewing its internal data.

"These campaigns were directed at followers of mainstream media and primarily promoted RT Tweets regarding news stories", Twitter's blog post reads.

The Senate Intelligence Committee has summoned Facebook, Google, and Twitter to testify at a public hearing November 1 about Russia's use of social media to influence USA elections.

Twitter allows users to register anonymously and has more public accounts than Facebook.

Twitter also said it found a further 179 accounts to be "related or linked" to the 22.

Twitter has been criticised as being too lax in policing fake or abusive accounts. Mark Warner, the top Democrat on the Intelligence Committee, told reporters he was "disappointed" by the briefing Twitter provided.

Those ad buys topped the $100,000 that Facebook said it discovered on its network that were linked to a Russian propaganda operation during the 2016 election campaign, a revelation that prompted calls from US legislators for more regulation of such social media advertising.

Twitter said it shared a roundup of advertisements by RT, a TV network funded by the Russian government that was formerly known as Russia Today. Both Twitter and Facebook are reportedly co-operating with the United States government in its investigation.

Hurricane Maria Spaghetti Models Move Farther From Florida
At the Puerto Rico Convention Center, where many Irma evacuees still reside, volunteers are gearing up for Hurricane Maria . According to reports , the winds reached 160 miles per hour and are believed to be headed towards St.

"Just as all the usual media organisations in the world do", Ms Margarita Simonyan was quoted as saying by the RIA news agency.

Twitter didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.

The revelation comes as other tech firms, including Facebook and Google, are under growing political pressure to look more closely at how their sites were used to try to influence the USA presidential election.

"Their response was frankly inadequate on nearly every level".

Facebook and Google have also been summoned to testify before the US Senate Intelligence Committee regarding Russian Federation meddling into US election.

The company said it found 22 accounts which were directly linked to the 450 Facebook accounts, found earlier this month.

Asked if he would subpoena Twitter, Warner said, "My goal with all of these entities and enterprises is to continue to try to work on a cooperative basis".
