Trump on firing Price for taxpayer-funded private jet use: 'We'll see'

While Republican efforts to fulfill one of the president's key campaign promises have fizzled several times this year, Trump may have found another reason to get rid of his secretary of Health and Human Services: private flights on the government's dime. Trump said he'd let Price know of his disappointment.

Asked by reporters if he might fire Price, the President left his HHS chief hanging.

Price has taken as many as 24 private flights in the past few months, costing the government an estimated $300,000.

Back in his days as a Georgia congressman, Price had lectured incessantly and sanctimoniously about the evils of government spending in general, and more specifically about the use of private jets by government officials who thought they were too good to fly commercial.

HHS' Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs Charmaine Yoest said that the chartered flights were booked due to Price's "incredibly demanding" schedule, and that the department looks at all possibilities for travel before booking accommodations.

The House Oversight and Government Reform committee is launching a wide-ranging examination of air travel by high-ranking Trump officials following reports about Price's trips.

The letter also accused Price of using insider information to trade healthcare stocks when he was a member of Congress.

Shifty Maria could prompt storm watch here by tomorrow
The hurricane claimed the lives of 30 people in the Caribbean, including at least 15 people in the small island Dominica. Panovich says by the time it reaches the Outer Banks, Maria should either be a weak hurricane or a strong tropical storm.

A congressional committee is launching a wide-ranging examination of air travel by high-ranking Trump officials following reports that Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price used pricey charters when cheaper commercial flights were available.

Asked Wednesday whether he has confidence in Price, Trump declined to offer a clear answer, saying only that he is "looking into it".

"I'm not going to comment on that because the President hasn't commented publicly", Kellyanne Conway, a senior White House adviser, told reporters. 5 big ideas to halt America's opioid epidemic Aligning clinical and community resources improves health MORE said Tuesday that her successor's use of private chartered flights is "stunning".

The HHS inspector general's office began a review last week to determine if Price complied with federal travel regulations, which generally require officials to minimize costs.

Democrats have also called Price's use of private jets - some with plush leather chairs, kitchens and other amenities - hypocritical.

Trump's remarks were the latest example of the White House distancing itself from Price's actions. And I think as a public servant, you have to try to set some sort of example.
