Tesla Update Extends Vehicle Ranges to Help Customers Escape Hurricane

Tesla Update Extends Vehicle Ranges to Help Customers Escape Hurricane

But last week, Tesla decided to temporarily make this extra capacity available even to Floridians who hadn't paid for the upgrade to ensure they had enough range to get out of Florida ahead of Hurricane Irma.

To aid the evacuation, Tesla temporarily opened up the models' full 75-kWh charge capacity by issuing an over-the-air-update to vehicles located in the path of the storm.

The cheaper versions of its cars aren't for sale anymore, but putting them on sale in the first place was Tesla solution to competing in effectively only two segments, and luxury ones at that: mid-size sedans and SUVs.

The next dilemma for Tesla owners in the state is finding a way to recharge their cars to get home. Tesla has software locked their batteries to 60 kWh, but unlocked the Model S/X 60/60D vehicles to their full 75 kWh capacity for those stuck in Florida.

Initially, Tesla made extra battery capacity available to customers for $9,000, but has since dropped the price to $2,000.

According to Interior Minister Arsen Avakov, 16 border guards and police officers sustained bodily injuries during the incident. And it is all the same to me who breaches the state border, whether fighters in the east or politicians in the west.

Here's how it works: Tesla remotely triggered a software upgrade for some cars in the southeast, where Irma is expected to cause significant damage, according to the spokesperson.

So, how can Tesla pull off such a wide margin on its vehicles, and more specifically, the Model 3?

Tesla launched the emergency software update after a Florida owner contacted the company, saying they needed an additional 30 miles of range to get out of the mandatory evacuation zone they were in.

Alas, the upgrade won't stick around forever - Tesla generally charges at least $5,000 for the permanent equivalent. The upgrade for those Florida customers will remain in place until September 16.

Millions of people are now affected by the evacuation of Florida as Hurricane Irma starts reaching the state and creates some hard traffic situation when escaping north.
