South Korea says quake in North Korea was not result of blast

South Korea says quake in North Korea was not result of blast

According to the reports, the 3.4-magnitude natural disaster was detected near North Korea's nuclear test site, where previous tests that resulted in earthquakes have been carried out.

Shin: There are a number of possibilities, including a surgical strike, but given that North Korea would most likely retaliate by attacking South Korea - an action that would lead to the deaths of hundreds of thousands of South Korean citizens, plus a good number of US soldiers and citizens in the country - it's not a tempting option. "In this case we saw none".

"It's something that the North Koreans have never really faced before", said Ruggiero, a former official at the State and Treasury departments who specialized in financial sanctions and weapons proliferation issues.

The quake was detected in Kilju county in North Hamgyong Province, where North Korea's known Punggyeri nuclear site is located, according to South Korea's meteorological agency.

Washington announced tougher restrictions Friday aimed at curbing North Korea's nuclear and ballistic missile programme, building on tough new United Nations sanctions aimed at choking Pyongyang of cash.

The latest test was followed by a second magnitude 4.1 quake that experts said could have been caused by landslides or a tunnel collapsing after the explosion. CTBTO says the tremors were unlikely man-made. The president's office did add that "analysis is still ongoing so we will keep you posted".

Russia's emergency ministry says background radiation in nearby Vladivostok was within the natural range.

"The depth is poorly constrained and has been held to 5 km by the seismologist", USGS said. It is wary of the fallout it would suffer if North Korea imploded, and it wants to preserve a buffer between itself and the United States forces based in South Korea.

This followed similar meetings that Sisi held earlier this year with American Jewish leaders at the presidential palace in Cairo. Earlier, President Sisi also met Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and discussed revival of peace talks.

There is still hope for peace, "and we must not give up" on solving the nuclear crisis on the Korean Peninsula, China's Foreign Minister Wang Yi told world leaders at the United Nations today, while urging the Democratic People's Republic of Korea's (DPRK) not to go "further along a unsafe direction".

China warned on Friday that the situation on the Korean Peninsula was "complicated and sensitive" and called for restraint on all sides after North Korea hinted that it might explode a hydrogen bomb over the Pacific Ocean.

Foreign Minister Ri Yong Ho spoke to reporters in NY, where he is attending the United Nations General Assembly and is scheduled to speak on Saturday.

Earlier this month, a 6.3 natural disaster shook North Korea before the country's state media claimed that it had carried out a successful hydrogen bomb test.

As pressure from the West to derail North Korea's nuclear weapons program increases, Kim will likely continue to develop cyberattack capabilities in response.

In a series of meetings this week at the United Nations, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi has reiterated to various foreign counterparts that apart from sanctions, the resolutions also call for dialogue to resume and that this needs to happen.

As reported earlier by JOL, as part of the new sanctions on North Korea, China will limit the export of oil products to North Korea and ban the import of textiles from the isolated state.

There is significantly less traffic on the roads in Pyongyang than earlier this year, although AFP reporters in the capital have not seen any evidence to back up Trump's tweet that: "Long gas lines forming in North Korea".

One project that has been discussed in the past involves building gas pipelines from Russian Federation to South Korea through North Korea.
