Shifty Maria could prompt storm watch here by tomorrow

Shifty Maria could prompt storm watch here by tomorrow

Maria is moving toward the northwest near 9 miles per hour.

Fair to partly cloudy skies along with light easterly winds and a slight chance of a quick, passing shower is in the forecast for our Saturday, with highs topping out in the lower 90s. That puts the storm too close for comfort, if squashed closer to the coast, those in eastern portions of North Carolina could be dealing with wind and rain by Tuesday or Wednesday.

Hurricanes Lee and Maria continued churning in the Atlantic Ocean on Sunday (Sept. 24), but neither was posing a significant threat to land masses, according to the National Hurricane Center.

"The impacts don't change much but we're not looking at the Category 3 storm that we have right now", Panovich said.

Panovich says by the time it reaches the Outer Banks, Maria should either be a weak hurricane or a strong tropical storm.

The NHC said the Carolina and Mid-Atlantic coasts should continue monitoring the storm, as its hurricane-force winds still extend about 60 miles from the eye.

North Korea's weakest nuclear test, its first one, conducted in 2006, generated a magnitude 4.3 tremor. According to its website, the first quake - with a 2.6 magnitude occurred at 12:43 a.m.

As Hurricane Maria continues moving northward, it's expected to gradually weaken.

But with the consistency of model runs that we've seen for several days that keep the storm well off the shores of SC, it does not appear that our state has much to worry about with Maria. It also hammered the Dominican Republic, the US Virgin Islands and the Turks and Caicos, a British overseas territory.

Parts of the United States have already been affected by multiple tropical storms systems this year, with Hurricane Maria now causing devastation across parts of the Caribbean.

Officials are still assessing the heart-breaking damage that Maria wreaked on Puerto Rico last week, where at least 10 people died as a direct result of the hurricane.

The hurricane claimed the lives of 30 people in the Caribbean, including at least 15 people in the small island Dominica.
