Russia's top general killed in Syria

Russia's top general killed in Syria

Also Monday, Russia blamed what it called "the duplicity of US policy" in Syria for the death of a Russian general killed by Islamic State mortar fire in Deir al-Zour.

Russian state news agency Tass reported that Asapov was killed "as a result of a mortar shelling by ISIS".

The SDF and Syrian troops with Russian air power have converged on IS in separate offensives in Deir Ezzor.

Russian Federation confirmed last night that one of its generals had been killed in an Islamic State mortar strike - its most senior officer to die in Syria.

The SDF, bolstered by USA airstrikes and Special Operations forces, has advanced on Deir al-Zour from the north.

"According to our information, USA intelligence services initiated the offensive to halt the successful advance of government troops to the east of Deir al-Zor", said Colonel-General Sergei Rudskoi.

Moscow denied this and said Syrian troops and Russian forces came under fire from SDF positions, warning the U.S that it would retaliate if the shelling was repeated.

Russian Defense Minister Sergey Lavrov last week hit out at President Donald Trump's predecessor, Barack Obama, for planting a "time bomb" between the two countries that has only served to worsen relations between them.

The plea against deportations was based on grounds of violation of conventions of worldwide human rights. The hearing on the matter has been adjourned for October 3 by the court.

The Russian Defence Ministry this week accused USA spies of initiating a jihadi offensive against government-held parts of northwest Syria on Tuesday.

Lieutenant-General Asapov was staying at the command post of Syrian troops to help Syrian commanders in a military operation to liberate Deir ez-Zor.

The next main target will be al-Omar oil field - Syria's largest - that is on the east bank of the Euphrates.

The Conoco field is named for the American company that discovered the gas reserves and built a processing plant there.

Citing Iranian state TV, the AP said that the strike destroyed ISIS bases and vehicles on the southern and eastern edges of Deir Ezzor, near the border with Iraq.

The SDF later said it had responded to the source of fire that targeted it from near the city of Deir Ezzor on Monday morning without specifying which forces it had attacked.

Previously, the U.S-led coalition had downed Iranian drones in the area, considering them hostile because they dropped ammunition near a base where US troops operated alongside allied Syrian opposition fighters.
