Jose begins Atlantic loop

Jose begins Atlantic loop

The National Hurricane Center on Tuesday called it "a rather amorphous blob", situated in the Atlantic on Tuesday about 650 miles north of Puerto Rico, and its forecast path is somewhere between freaky and counterintuitive.

The track for Hurricane Jose is a odd one.

It was a category 1 hurricane.

Hurricane Jose is in no hurry to go anywhere.

As for its forecast, hurricanes in this part of the Atlantic often race out to sea and into oblivion, but that won't be the case with Jose.

However, most computer models indicate Jose will stay out to sea and complete a tight enough loop to avoid moving onshore.

With more than two months left in the current hurricane season, NOAA advises coastal residents to have a plan should a tropical system threaten or strike.

Meteorologist Eleanor Bell, of The Weather Channel, said: "Models are continuing to struggle to resolve the track of this storm".

"By days 4 and 5, Jose should track toward the west-northwest with a bit faster forward motion as the aforementioned mid-level high strengthens to the northeast of Jose".

Hurricane-force winds extend up to 25 miles from the center and tropical-storm-force winds extend up to 140 miles. "Later this week and over the weekend, the hurricane is expected to move northwestward toward the east coast of the United States".

The National Hurricane Center recognizes this uncertainty in its Tuesday morning forecasts for Jose, saying "after (three days), the confidence in the forecast decreases as the guidance diverges significantly". It will likely dissipate from Tuesday evening, the National Hurricane Center said. If history is a guide, more will be on the way. But hurricanes into November and even December are not unheard of.
