GOP launches campaign pushing Democrats for Menendez ouster

GOP launches campaign pushing Democrats for Menendez ouster

Menendez and Melgen were indicted in 2015 and face multiple fraud and bribery charges in a case that could threaten Menendez's political career and potentially the makeup of a deeply divided U.S. Senate if he's convicted.

New Jersey's senior US Senator will be seated at the defense table as his federal corruption trial begins with opening statements today in Newark.

Robert Menendez, a Democrat in his 12th year as a senator from New Jersey, is charged with using his influence to do favors for a Florida eye doctor accused of overbilling Medicare.

Before the alleged conspiracy began, Lowell said, Melgen contributed to the senator's election efforts, Menendez took trips on the doctor's jet, and the two exchanged gifts.

He told the crowd, "We can keep the dream alive". Melgen was described in a recent prosecution brief as Menendez's "patron".

Second, in the event that Menendez is convicted - a potential outcome that was bolstered by last week's Department of Justice brief that Menendez has concealed up to a dozen trips paid for by Melgen which he failed to report and the possibility that Melgen could provide evidence against him in return for a lighter sentence - Senate Democrats will be forced to make a hard choice: Vote to expel Menendez from the Senate and lose a Democrat vote, or be subjected to wilting public criticism over hypocricy.

Menendez's trial marks the first time in nine years that a sitting USA senator will go on trial for federal bribery charges, according to Fox News.

US Might Say Iran Violating Nuclear Deal Without Withdrawing, Envoy Says
Haley claimed they were concerned about Iran's behaviour but acknowledged they did not want the U.S. to withdraw. The next presidential recertification is due next month. "I get that Congress doesn't want this, " Ms.

Menendez says that "not once have I dishonored my public office".

Lawyer Raymond Brown criticized Judge William Walls over a line in his opinion last week that rejected the senator's request for the case to be adjourned on days when the Senate has "critical" votes scheduled.

The digital ad push, which will run on Facebook and Twitter, presses Democratic leaders in Congress, Senate Democrats up for 2018 re-election in states President Donald Trump won and Democratic senators, like Warren, who are rumored to be considering 2020 presidential bids, to answer whether to believe Menendez should keep his U.S. Senate seat if convicted. Defense attorneys may claim that the interactions between Melgen and Menendez do not rise to that level.

Menendez has vehemently denied the allegations.

Attorneys for Menendez have argued that, given last year's Supreme Court ruling, the case against their client should be thrown out. A conviction for Menendez would give the GOP a rare opportunity to add another seat to their majority. If he leaves the Senate before Gov. Chris Christie leaves office January 16, the Republican governor would pick a successor. Barack Obama calling for Republican U.S. Sen.

The trial will examine whether the New Jersey Democrat lobbied for Florida ophthalmologist Dr. Salomon Melgen's business interests in exchange for political donations and gifts.
