Former Georgian president Saakashvili forces his way into Ukraine

Former Georgian president Saakashvili forces his way into Ukraine

According to the Ukrainian president, the former Georgian and Ukrainian official committed a crime instead of appealing the decision to strip him of Ukrainian citizenship.

"I am fighting against rampant corruption, against the fact that oligarchs are in full control of Ukraine again, against the fact that Maidan has been betrayed", Saakashvili said at a press conference in the city of Lviv.

Saakashvili has accused the Ukrainian authorities of using pressure tactics to deter him from returning to Kiev, where he has launched a campaign to unseat Poroshenko. Saakashvili served as Ukraine's Odessa Region Governor but in November 2016 he stepped down and set up his own party and began criticizing the authorities.

Saakashvili was born in Georgia and was president of the country from 2004 to 2013.

Saakashvili denies the accusations branding them a political witch hunt.

According to Interior Minister Arsen Avakov, 16 border guards and police officers sustained bodily injuries during the incident. And it is all the same to me who breaches the state border, whether fighters in the east or politicians in the west.

Poroshenko's office said Saakashvili had failed to deliver change as governor, adding his Ukrainian citizenship was withdrawn because he allegedly put false information on his registration form.

Mexico natural disaster death toll rises to at least 66
National Hurricane Center says that Tropical Storm Katia is starting to stall over Mexico's Sierra Madre mountains. The quake was more powerful than the 1985 tremor that hit close to Mexico City and caused thousands of deaths.

Speaking in an interview to his 11-year-old son Nikoloz posted online, Mr Saakashvili said people essentially had carried him through the border.

Saakashvili and a crowd of supporters are proceeding into Ukraine on foot after breaking through a line of guards on the Polish-Ukrainian border.

Poroshenko, meanwhile, told reporters that Saakashvili was a "criminal" for entering the country against the wishes of border patrol and would be dealt with as such. "There always must be legal responsibility", Poroshenko said in televised remarks on Monday.

Earlier, Georgia sent the Ukrainian Prosecutor General two requests for the arrest and extradition of Saakashvili.

Hundreds of Saakashvili supporters broke through a police block and burst into the neutral zone where they paraded victorious with Saakashvili into Ukraine, cheering his nickname "Misha" and "glory to Ukraine".

Poroshenko stripped Saakashvili of his citizenship in July amid a dramatic falling out. He eventually got off the train and took a bus to Medyka, where he successfully crossed the border.
