Mark Cavendish injured in ugly crash with at the Tour de France

"We have chose to disqualify Peter Sagan from Tour de France 2017 as he endangered some of his colleagues seriously in the final metres of the sprint which happened in Vittel", said race jury president Philippe Marien. Marien said they were applying UCI race rules that allow them to disqualify riders in "serious cases".

Arnaud Demare became the first French stage victor of this year's Tour, crossing the line first in Vittel ahead of Sagan and Norway's Alexander Kristoff, but his achievement was overshadowed by the two serious crashes on the final sprint.

Cavendish required medical treatment on the ground before crossing the finish line with his right hand bandaged.

"I get on with Peter well but I don't get it".

Soon after the race though, Sagan was disqualified having appeared to have caught Cavendish with his elbow.

The Briton of the Dimension Data team eventually got back on his bike and crossed the line after being attended to by race medics.

But it might also have surprised fans who would have expected him to be marking his general classification rivals further down the final climb rather than burning energy chasing Sagan. "I get on with Peter, a crash is a crash, but I'd just like to know about the elbow".

Although Sagan had come to speak to him at his bus after the stage, Cavendish said he still wanted an explanation about the elbow.

Roger Federer to face Alexander Zverev in Halle final
In the semi-final, he eased past his Russian opponent Karen Khachanov 6-4 7-6 (5), to reach his 11th final in Halle. In the victory, Zverev won 82 percent of his first serve points and 48 percent of his second serve points.

When he left for hospital, he was also wearing a sling. "I'll have to get it looked at".

Sagan's bodyguard told journalists that the world champion had been destabilised in the sprint finish by another rider.

Demare, the 2016 Milan-Sanremo victor, took over the lead of the green jersey points classification after Marcel Kittel was caught up in the first crash that split the peloton before the final kilometre.

The second crash came as riders begun to launch their sprint to the line and move towards the right-hand side of the road, with Dimension Data rider Mark Cavendish of Britain making contact with Bora-Hansgrohe's Sagan before hitting the barriers.

Race leader Geraint Thomas was taken down in the first crash, along with around a dozen riders, but he emerged unhurt.

Both Thomas and Froome are fine, Team Sky said. "I'm delighted", Sagan said.

Australia's Michael Matthews was in the bunch finish as well and finished the stage in seventh place. "He wears the world champion's jersey and thinks he can do what he wants", he said of the Slovak, who had already annoyed some of the other riders in Monday's stage three intermediate sprint.
