Jean-Claude Juncker spits the dummy with a rant at EU Parliament

Jean-Claude Juncker spits the dummy with a rant at EU Parliament

EU Commission president Jean-Claude Juncker called European MEPs "ridiculous" on Tuesday for failing to turn up to an address by Malta's prime minister, saying they should show more respect for smaller members of the bloc. "It is not up to the Commission to control the Parliament, it is the Parliament that controls the Commission", the Italian MEP said in a vexed mix of Italian and French.

The exchange at the legislature in Strasbourg, France, was even more fantastic since Juncker and Tajani belong to the same EPP Christian Democratic group. "The parliament is totally ridiculous!"

The outburst came as only a small number of Members of the European Parliament (MEP) attended a session which was meant to review the six-months Malta spent as EU presidency chair.

When Juncker realised that only 30 MEPs were present, he abruptly decided not to hold his speech on the review of the Maltese Presidency.

But his remarks drew a sharp response from parliament head Antonio Tajani, who said his colleague was out of order and should mind his tongue.

Visibly annoyed, Italy's Antonio Tajani, the president of the Parliament, asked Juncker to show some respect. We are not ridiculous, please.

Gangrape survivor attacked with acid, Adityanath questions authenticity of report
The victim shouted for help but the attackers managed to make good their escape after perpetrating the crime, the police said. The gunners were later withdrawn. "In fact a police team was sent immediately at their house to detain them".

He accused the MEPs of ignoring Muscat because Malta was a small country. I applaud those who have bothered to turn up.

"I wanted to pay tribute to the Maltese Government and to the prime minister, I want to pay tribute to what the prime minister of Malta did he made excellent work". Its 751 members are the only directly elected politicians outside of the individual member states, but in practice a large degree of power is situated in both the Commission and the EU Council.

Only thirty-something of the Parliament's 700 MEPs turned up and Mr Juncker suggested the number would have been far greater if it was a debate on the presidency of a country such as France or Germany.

Juncker: 'I will never again, I will never again attend a meeting of this kind.

The commission can not compel MEPs to attend parliament but the testy exchange means more people will be counting MEPs in seats when Estonia's prime minister, Jüri Ratas, is in Strasbourg on Wednesday.
