Trump disputes Russian interference in 2016 election

Trump disputes Russian interference in 2016 election

President Trump on Thursday called Russia's meddling in the 2016 election "all a big Dem HOAX" and accused former president Barack Obama and his administration of not doing enough a year ago to "stop" Russian interference.

During the Senate Intelligence Committee hearing in Washington D.C. on Wednesday, Steve Sandvoss - executive director of Illinois State Board of Elections - said security training funded by a federal entity would be beneficial in the future.

If Russian "patriotic hackers" - or other indirect or direct agents of the Russian state - were able to penetrate voting machines (in at least 21 states, according to yesterday's hearings) then the problem is not just with a rival nation-state attempting to influence USA elections, it is with the machines, the software and internet connections.

He also says one of the presidential candidates was claiming the election was rigged.

Johnson described his discussions with state election officials about ensuring the integrity of the voting process. "At first it was one state, then three, then five, then a dozen", says Anthony Ferrante, a former Federal Bureau of Investigation cybersecurity official and member of the White House team charged with preparedness and response to the cyber intrusion. Claims have been made that the the Trump campaign had established connections with the Russian government, who orchestrated the hacks on the DNC servers, in effect helping Trump win the election.

Johnson said he was disappointed the DNC would not accept Homeland Security's help in finding its cyber-vulnerabilities.

Johnson says a lot of internal discussion and consideration preceded an October statement about the hacking from his department and the director of national intelligence.

"I don't believe they interfered", he told Time magazine late previous year.

Trump confirms he is under investigation
"You are witnessing the single greatest WITCH HUNT in American political history - led by some very bad and conflicted people! ". He also claimed that the person investigating him advised him to fire Comey, though it's unclear whom he was referring to.

But though the government disclosed that 21 states were potentially impacted by the targeting, lawmakers were left frustrated that the public still doesn't have a full picture of what exactly the Russians did during the election and that it's not fully clear what the USA will do to protect itself going forward.

In the run-up to the 2016 election, the Russians probed online voter registration systems in 21 states, government officials told Congress on Wednesday.

Connie Lawson, Indiana secretary of state and president-elect of the National Association of Secretaries of State, said there were three conference calls led by Johnson with top state election officials about attempts to compromise state elections systems.

Yes, it's clear Russian Federation (with Vladimir Putin's full approval) orchestrated cyberattacks created to influence the 2016 contest, and also pushed fake news.

As homeland security secretary, Johnson lacked access to much of the intelligence being gathered.

Officials say Oklahoma election systems weren't targeted by the Russian government a year ago despite evidence saying at least 20 other states were targeted.

Despite the relative simplicity of establishing these safeguards, it will require a significant financial investment from states and counties, and new legislation, to implement them. Manfra said that all "system owners" in those states had been contacted about the incidents, but that may not invlude state election officials.

White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer raised eyebrows Tuesday after stating that he had not had a discussion with the President on whether or not he believes Russian Federation meddled in the election. Mark Warner of Virginia, the ranking Democrat. "But I do not believe our country is made safer by holding this information back from the American public".
