Transformers Disappoints, Wonder Woman Soars In Latest Box Office Results

Proving Amazon's $12 million purchase at this year's Sundance Film Festival was worth every penny, the movie - which Judd Apatow produced and "Silicon Valley's" Kumali Nanjiani starred in - had a $435,000 opening with a $87,000 per-screen average on the five screens it was released on (Lionsgate handled the film's theatrical release). Apart from Josh, the movie also stars Sir Anthony Hopkins, Laura Haddock, Stanley Tucci, Jerrod Carmichael, John Turturro, Isabela Moner, Gil Birmingham and Jean Dujardin.

Humans and Transformers are at war, and Optimus Prime, the leader of the Autobots, is gone.

So when director Michael Bay announced in 2005 that he was planning a Transformers live-action movie with Steven Spielberg as producer, my heart skipped a beat. From China alone, Transformers: The Last Knight earned $123.4 million from 7,200 locations. Upcoming markets for the film include France (June 28), Brazil (July 20), Mexico (July 21), Japan (August 4) and Spain (August 4).

Mark Wahlberg, who joined the franchise in the fourth film, the unwatchably long and convoluted "Transformers: Age of Extinction", is back as the scruffy inventor Cade Yeager. The computer-animated comedy film reported an early worldwide total of 141.3 million to date.

The Beguiled, which debuted in four cinemas, earned $241,000 for a theater average of $60,136.

Jong-hwan is also supposedly mulling over the idea of forming a singular inter-Korean women's ice hockey team for the 2018 Games. Do said he is also considering holding some of the Winter Games events in North Korea's new ski resort.

In a tie for second place, Warner Bros.' "Wonder Woman" and Pixar's "Cars 3" both reported 25.175 million USA dollars for the weekend. Amazon plunked down $12 million for the Judd Apatow-produced Sundance Film Festival hit.

At number two, and continuing its domestic rise to the top, is Wonder Woman with $26.1 million, only falling 39% from last weekend.

Gal Gadot's Wonder Woman is battling it out for second with Cars 3 with both films nabbing $25.2 million, although that may change when the final tally comes in on Monday.

Sixth place belonged to Universal Pictures' The Mummy, which added $5.84 million for a three-week total of $68.5 million. From a script by Kumail Nanjiani and his now-wife, Emily Gordon, the film draws from their real-life courtship and revolves around a young Pakistani comedian (Nanjiani) and his American girlfriend (Zoe Kazan) who must contend with their cultural differences (and two very different sets of parents) when she becomes gravely ill. The family film, which won last weekend's box office, is expected to pass the $100 million mark in North America by Monday. That's a franchise low for the sequel from Paramount and Hasbro, behind the first in the modern series, which earned $70.5 million in 2007.

While the weak domestic opening for The Last Knight is no doubt cause for concern for Paramount, the studio should be able to take comfort in the film's reception overseas - which will help push the first weekend global tally of the film far into the $200 million range (initial estimates had the film grossing anywhere from $237.5 million to $270 million). Directed by Espen Sandberg and Joachim Rønning, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales stars Johnny Depp, Javier Bardem, Brenton Thwaites, Kevin R. McNally, Kaya Scodelario, Golshifteh Farahani, Stephen Graham, David Wenham and Geoffrey Rush.
