South Korean leader observes missile test amid North's threats

South Korean leader observes missile test amid North's threats

South Korean protestors march toward the US embassy during a rally against the deployment of the US Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system in Seoul on June 24, 2017.

Yoon also called the earlier report "false". Defense Minister Tomomi Inada is now coordinating plans with the U.S. to visit an Aegis Ashore testing facility in Hawaii next month.

In an interview today, South Korean President Moon Jae-in offered more details on the ongoing dispute over the US THAAD missile defense installed in the south of his country, a controversial deployment that he's been critical of.

President Moon said he has "high expectations" for the upcoming summit with U.S. President Trump and the G20 Summit in Germany the week after saying he would like to sit down with as many world leaders as possible there as North Korea's nuclear program will take center stage in both events.

It's a twist on the typical pattern on the Korean Peninsula, where North Korean state media frequently issue reports about leader Kim Jong Un observing missile tests that it says are needed to combat South Korean and USA hostility. Aside of expanding its missile arsenal, South Korea is also strengthening its missile defense systems, which include Patriot-based systems and the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense battery now under deployment in the southeast county of Seongju.

Deputy AG Rosenstein set for budget hearing Tuesday
Rosenstein said that while it depends on the circumstances, "I think the general answer is no". Neither Trump nor Attorney General Jeff Sessions has offered public support for Mueller.

Though parts of system are already in place, Moon this month suspended further deployment.

By such capability, he means the North's ability to build a nuclear-tipped intercontinental ballistic missile capable of hitting mainland U.S.

On Thursday, Moon told Reuters that according to the "original agreement", only one missile battery, consisting of six missile launchers, was due to be deployed in 2017, with five others due to be imported and brought online thereafter.

"For some reason that I do not know, this entire THAAD process was accelerated", Moon was quoted as saying.

The remarks came in reaction to a question by a United States journalist in a recent interview with South Korean President Moon Jae-in, in which the interviewer from CBS stated it was not clear whether U.S. President Donald Trump would "agree to allow" his South Korean counterpart to negotiate with the North Koreans. (KOREAN) "We will maintain our security with a strong South Korea-U.S. alliance and overwhelming defense capabilities". South Korea also operates Aegis-equipped destroyers.
