London council evacuates residents amid fire safety concerns

A major evacuation is under way on a London housing estate over fire safety fears in the wake of the Grenfell Tower disaster. At least 79 people died in the June 14 fire, which engulfed the building so quickly overnight that firefighters were unable to reach numerous victims.

"Consumers who believe they may have a Hotpoint fridge freezer model number FF175BP or FF175BG should call our freephone hotline on 0800 316 3826 or visit hotpointservice.co.uk/fridgefreezer so that we can register their details and contact them with further information".

One tribute, from a firefighter from a station in the Kensington and Chelsea borough read: "20th floor, we tried. we're sorry". "We did our best I promise".

Global desk - Investigators on Friday said the last week's deadly fire at a residential tower in London was caused by a refrigerator, media reports say.

One shirt bearing the London Ambulance Service logo said: "We refuse to forget you". "The shocking images from that night clearly show just how quickly and ferociously the fire spread across the external surface of the building".

The detective superintendent also said she is anxious that the authorities might not have a true sense of how many people were in the building, in part because people who lived there or knew someone who did might be fearful of having their immigration status reviewed. The call comes after London Mayor Sadiq Khan's pledge to seek an amnesty for people who may have been living in the tower illegally.

'In addition, we will visit all premises identified to check the fire safety of the building and make sure that in the event of a fire, firefighting facilities are all in place.

OR becomes first state to allow third gender option
The shift comes a year after an OR judge ruled a retired Army veteran could legally identify as non-binary. OR is among the handful of states in the vanguard of transgender and LGBTQ rights.

Teacher Kim Price, who lives in Blashford Tower with her 14-year-old son, said: "I really don't know what to do, I'm so scared right now".

Tests on the building's material as part of the police investigation were "small scale", the officer said, but added: "All I can say at the moment is they (tiles and insulation) don't pass any safety tests".

Detective Superintendent Fiona McCormack says officers have seized documents in the investigation into the fire.

The buildings have been found to be covered with the same type of cladding as used at Grenfell, five miles to the south west, where at least 79 people died in June 14's tragedy.

Towers in Camden, Manchester, Hounslow and Plymouth are among the at-risk buildings, the Department for Communities and Local Government confirmed.

The panels were apparently produced in different grades making it different to identify precisely which material may have been used in specific cases, she said.
