Gorkhaland stir: Paramilitary jawan, GJM supporter die in fresh violence

Gorkhaland stir: Paramilitary jawan, GJM supporter die in fresh violence

Army contingents were present in Darjeeling in the morning, but later a heavy deployment paramilitary and police force personnel was made.

Earlier in the day, GJM chief Bimal Gurung claimed that the West Bengal Police are illegally entering their supporters' houses and torturing them and also accused them of killing two of his supporters.

However, Amar Rai said his son has no political affiliations and he was released later. A vehicle was also set on fire.

The situation in Darjeeling continues to remain volatile as the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) plans to take out a procession today to honour those who died in the protests on Saturday.

There were reports of death of an assistant commandant of the India Reserve Battalion but the death has not been confirmed yet.

The violence began when police raided the homes and offices of members of the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM), a separatist movement.

Internet services were down and according to the protesters, this was a ploy of the administration and the police to counter the Gorkhaland movement. Darjeeling has been on the boil for the past ten days and indefinite shutdown is on by GJM in support of its separate Gorkhaland demand.

The police further said that as many as 36 security personnel were injured in the clashed, DNA reported.

Minecraft gets cross-play with consoles - but only on Windows 10
And with more than 100 million copies of Minecraft sold , it's a good bet plenty of people will try the servers. That means cross-console play will be available for players between Microsoft and Nintendo consoles.

On Sunday, Anuj Sharma, the director general of West Bengal police, said "at least 35 policemen were injured yesterday".

GJM activists threw petrol bombs, bottles and stones at the anti-riot police personnel, who fired teargas shells to disperse the mob in Singmari. "We had to resort to lathi- charge", a senior police official said.

Mamata had on Saturday said that the GJM-led agitation in Darjeeling hills was a "deep-rooted conspiracy" supported by the insurgent groups of the north-east and some foreign countries. The Court also directed the petitioner to serve a notice to GJM chief Bimal Gurung and party general secretary Roshan Giri, who are respondents in the petition.

The state government will hold an all party meeting in Siliguri on June 22 for peace in the hills. The Chief Minister is now facing the courage of the Gorkhas. She should stop lecturing so much and concentrate on her job. The party's leaders may well be looking out for skirmishes such as Saturday's to whip up frenzy among the common people.

Meanwhile in what seemed like the Hill agitation is slowly spreading in the Plains the GJM and associated parties had called a 12-hour bandh in Dooars region on Sunday.

The toy-train services of the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (DHR) have been suspended in view of the strike for the safety of passengers, staff and the property of the DHR.

The GJM supporters in Darjeeling protesting against CM Mamta Banerjee's decision to make Bengali a compulsory subject to be taught in state schools up to Class 10 took a new turn with Morcha chief signalling to accelerate the protests while raising fresh demands for a separate Gorkhaland.
