Cuba calls Trump speech on island 'grotesque spectacle'

Cuba calls Trump speech on island 'grotesque spectacle'

No doubt Cuban leaders counted on the United States not to look back after former President Barack Obama reversed longstanding policies toward the communist island in December 2014.

Embassies in Havana and Washington will remain open. And the idea that we can make change by disengaging or turning inward has been contradicted by every policy discussion I've had in Cuba - whether in a classroom with a Cuban law student - or a conversation with a street vendor in Old Havana.

"Easing of restrictions on travel and trade does not help the Cuban people".

In its reaction Sunday, the Russian ministry said the votes in NY each fall illustrate "the global community's position on Cuba", and said the Trump administration should "listen".

"The new measures will attack the only sources of growth that the Cuban economy now has: tourism and the private sector", said Pavel Vidal, a Cuban economist at Pontifical Xaverian University in Colombia. Even the Cuban-American population largely favored Obama's rapprochement with Cuba, with 51% of Cuban-Americans supporting it. The goal of the regulations is to ensure the money spent goes straight to the Cuban people not the Cuban government.

For the first time last October, the USA and Israel abstained at the United Nations General Assembly vote calling for lifting of the embargo.

Instead, the US President, who has been once again ill-advised, is taking decisions that favor the political interests of an irrational minority of Cuban origin in the state of Florida which, out of petty motivations, does not give up its intent to punish Cuba and its people for exercising the legitimate and sovereign right of being free and having taken the reins of their own destiny.

"America is prepared to outstretch its hand and work with the people of Cuba, but we will not, we will not empower their oppressors", Sen. The decision released the U.S. Coast Guard to deal with drug smuggling via the open seas with its limited resources and vast responsibilities. Whether Trump's move will pay out is another question.

Kiwis beat British to reach America's Cup challenger finals
Japan's America's Cup dream ended as SoftBank Team Japan went down 5-3 to Sweden's Artemis Racing in their semifinal on Friday. A spokesman said the shore team worked through the night and that the boat will be ready for Thursday's three scheduled races.

Talking with reporters on a visit to Austria, Mr. Rodriguez said the U.S.is in no position to "lecture us on human rights and democracy" and that Mr. Trump's policy reversal marked "a grotesque spectacle straight from the Cold War". "They have nothing to do with human rights". But he was soon challenged.

Critics similarly noted that the President had stopped in Saudi Arabia on his first trip outside of the United States while in office.

According to the New York-based Human Rights Watch, Trump has plenty of human rights issues to address at home.

The Cuban Commission for Human Rights and National Reconciliation - an independent group that lacks authorization and is considered illegal by the government - received more than 7,900 reports of arbitrary detentions from January through August previous year, according to Human Rights Watch.

Some 2.3 million people are behind bars in the U.S., the largest reported incarcerated population in the world. "Now we hold the cards".

It should be recalled that Cuba is a State Party to 44 worldwide human rights instruments, while the USA is only a State Party to 18. "Return the fugitives from American justice - including the return of the cop-killer Joanne Chesimard", he added, in reference to the Black Liberation Army activist who was granted asylum in Cuba in 1984 and remains on the FBI's "most wanted terrorists" list.

Because of that, Trump has restored some, but not all, of the economic and travel restrictions in place before Obama's action. China has been a strong voice calling for lifting the inhumane USA embargo.
