Trump, Pope Exchange Gifts In First Meeting

Trump, Pope Exchange Gifts In First Meeting

His announcement came just a day after the US State Department laid out plans to put "America first" and slash Washington's budget for diplomacy and foreign aid by more than 30 percent.

"He is something", the president later said of his host.

But a Vatican statement said Wednesday's meeting was "cordial" and expressed a hope for "serene collaboration" between the church and the United States government, including "assistance to immigrants".

The two men discussed "the promotion of peace in the world through political negotiation and interreligious dialogue" and homed in on the need to protect Christians in the Middle East, CNN quoted the Vatican statement. Pope Francis and Trump have very different views on issues such as immigration, climate change and arms sales.

Trump, who has threatened to ignore the Paris accords on emissions and described global warming as a hoax, vowed to read them.

Trump told his host as he left, 'Thank you.

If the Pope appeared restrained with the President, he was far more relaxed with Melania Trump, sharing a joke with the First Lady over her husband's weight.

Saudi Arabia's King Salman bin Abdulaziz al-Saud (R), US President Donald Trump (2nd L) and US First Lady Melania Trump make their way into a gallery to see a display of Saudi modern art at the Saudi Royal Court in Riyadh on May 20, 2017. "Potica?" - a reference to a calorie-laden cake from Slovenia, Melania's country of birth.

Trump's gifts included a collection of first editions by Martin Luther King and a bronze sculpture.

"I'm gonna have to scare the pope because it's the only thing. they better hope that capitalism works, because it's the only thing we have right now".

Supreme Court Strikes Down Two Congressional Districts In North Carolina
A lower court has overturned that state's gerrymandering, and the issue is expected to land before the Supreme Court . The ruling was a rebuke to North Carolina Republicans but the districts in question have already been re-drawn.

Trump's administration has pleased the Church by axing rules protecting tax-funded financing of family planning clinics that offer abortions.

Accompanying the President were his wife and daughter, who both wore long-sleeved black dresses complete with mantillas, or veils, as tradition dictates for women in official visits with the Pontiff.

The audience took place in the private library of the Apostolic Palace, the lavish papal residence that Francis does not use, having opted instead for modest lodgings in a guesthouse for visiting clerics.

Trump met separately with top Vatican diplomats and visited the Sistine Chapel before leaving the Vatican.

He, I think, told both Cardinal Parolin and also told Prime Minister (Paolo) Gentiloni that this is something that he would be taking up for a decision when we return from this trip.

The pope said a year ago a man who thinks about building walls and not bridges is "not Christian", a sharp reprimand for Trump's vow to build a wall along the USA border with Mexico. Trump, seeming subdued, said "it is a great honor".

President Donald Trump is meeting with Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel in Brussels.

But there have also been conciliatory moves. When asked about his discussion with Francis, Trump said it had gone very well.

The president has spent the week traveling to holy Muslim, Jewish and Christian sites during his first official trip overseas. He also said the thought a successful staging of the visit could provide Trump with a good news storyline to briefly overshadow the tumult back home over the firing of his Federal Bureau of Investigation director and the ongoing Russian Federation probe.
