Planned Parenthood forced to close four clinics in Iowa after funding cut

Planned Parenthood forced to close four clinics in Iowa after funding cut

The closings will reduce the number of Planned Parenthood facilities in Iowa that provide abortions from eight to five.

Planned Parenthood has shut down clinics in New Mexico and Wyoming recently as well.

Planned Parenthood of the Heartland will close in Sioux City and three other Iowa locations at the end of June.

A spokesman couldn't be immediately reached for comment.

As a result of a new state law preventing Medicaid patients from seeking health care through the family planning provider, Planned Parenthood announced on Thursday that it will have to close four of its Iowa clinics, the Huffington Post reported.

Its Columbia center stopped offering the procedure - a nonsurgical type, induced with a pill - in 2015 after its only doctor performing medication-induced abortions lost needed privileges with University of Missouri Health Care.

This story will be updated.

A federal judge blocked both provisions, which were part of the same wide-ranging abortion law then-Gov. A state report in 2015 found that almost 30,000 fewer women received birth control, cancer screenings and other care as a result.

Minn. session deadline 'hanging by a thread' as budget talks continue
But most lawmakers were relieved to finally solve a problem that threatened to create major headaches for their constituents. Late Friday morning, House Speaker Kurt Daudt, R-Crown, said they had placed a "cone of silence" on their discussions.

Texas in 2011 made a similar move that has reduced funding.

The clinic closures come at a crucial time for women seeking access to reproductive health care in the USA, and particularly in Iowa. It blocks access to all Planned Parenthood services-including cancer screenings and birth control-through the state's family planning program.

Congressional Republicans are seeking to cut Planned Parenthood out of Medicaid, the state-federal health insurance program for the poor and disabled, with the House earlier this month passing a health-care bill that would do just that. We have been in Iowa for 83 years, and we are not going anywhere.

While they seem benign, these requirements do nothing to ensure that abortion, which is already 14 times safer than childbirth, is any safer for patients and instead create often insurmountable obstacles to providers.

Research by the Guttmacher Institute shows that Texas's family planning program in 2013 served less than one-quarter of the women it helped in 2011.

The Casper location does not provide abortions.

The Republican governor tapped McClelland to lead the effort shortly after taking office in January.

"Planned Parenthood claims abortion is a 'women's right, ' but this rhetoric forgets we're talking about young, minor girls", said Mike Fichter, president and CEO of Indiana Right to Life. "For many Iowans, Planned Parenthood is the only access they have to health care services, and forcing these clinics to close will only mean families will have less access to basic medical services".
