Minn. session deadline 'hanging by a thread' as budget talks continue

Minn. session deadline 'hanging by a thread' as budget talks continue

The Minnesota House voted 120-11 on Wednesday to bring the state into compliance with the federal Real ID law; the Senate followed suit later in the evening with a 57-8 vote.

Gov. Dayton has signed the Real ID bill into law while battling over the budget.

This has taken two years of fighting about state's rights, privacy, and driver's licenses for undocumented workers to reach this deal, but the House and Senate have now passed the compromise bill and Gov. Dayton is expected to sign it.

Governor Dayton's office told WDAZ the proposal for tab fee increases first came from Speaker Kurt Daudt a year ago.

"I think this is fair and equitable, half and half - meet halfway", Dayton said.

Minnesotans may have to shell out hundreds when it comes to buying a new ride. Late Friday morning, House Speaker Kurt Daudt, R-Crown, said they had placed a "cone of silence" on their discussions.

Will deal with only triple talaq due to paucity of time
A five-judge bench of the apex court further observed that it would not hear polygamy issue along with the triple talaq case. He also reiterated that triple talaq was a "non-issue" which does not require judicial scrutiny.

The measure allows people to choose between a Real ID license and a "non-compliant" license.

Meanwhile, the state edged closer to a January 2018 deadline by which it must approve Real ID standards, or leave Minnesotans unable to fly or visit military facilities without a passport. The new law would require the Minnesota Department of Public Safety to begin issuing licenses by October 1, 2018.

The federal government has twice denied Minnesota's request for an extension to comply with the Real ID federal standards for driver's license security rules.

But most lawmakers were relieved to finally solve a problem that threatened to create major headaches for their constituents.

But the two sides spent Thursday outside of negotiating room and instead in the public eye, criticizing each other's budget proposals and calling on the other side to make the next move.

That plan would give $682 million for the Legislature to spend on taxes and transportation, Frans said, with the expectation that they might want to put more toward one area than the other. "He was delivering a counteroffer shortly after our interview".
