Levee breaks in Arkansas as record flooding continues to plague the region

Levee breaks in Arkansas as record flooding continues to plague the region

West Alton's 500 residents live near the confluence of the nation's two largest rivers, the Missouri and the Mississippi. Transportation officials hope to open eastbound lanes before Friday morning rush hour. Water had begun to spill over the top of the levee on Tuesday and it breached on Wednesday.

Rivers in Louisiana are pouring over their banks after parts of the state were inundated with up to 8 inches of rain. He also reminded people not to drive over flooded roadways. Students and the driver were rescued and no one was hurt.

Heavy rain last weekend resulted in a sudden rise in rivers in Missouri, Illinois and Arkansas.

"Today they have identified nine levee breaches in Randolph County alone, three of these breaches of the levees appear to be categorized as major, and this, of course, impacts the flooding in Lawrence County, which we're watching very carefully", Hutchinson said in a press conference.

NKorea says it will speed up nuke program in response to US
North Korea has continued to test missiles this year after carrying out its fourth and fifth nuclear tests in a decade last year. Mr Trump's suggestion of admiration for Kim, however, is something entirely new.

The Randolph County Office of Emergency Management says about 150 people are affected by the evacuations in east Pocahontas.

St. Louis County officials say 200 homes along the Meramec have been damaged in the flooding and another 1,500 are potentially in harm's way.

Missouri is among several states in the central US where risky floods have occurred. Officials said the levee was built only to withstand 28 feet of water.

River levels are falling after record and near-record flooding in parts of the Midwest, but the crisis is far from over. But the mess left behind was substantial. But the river remains dangerously high, and St. Louis County Police Chief Jon Belmar urged patience for evacuated residents anxious to get back home.
