Canadian PM responds to Trump's criticism of dairy industry

"Our farmers in Wisconsin and New York State are being put out of business, our dairy farmers". He also suggested bringing House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI) and other lawmakers into the discussion.

"Canada, what they've done to our dairy farm workers, it's a disgrace", Trump said. In remarks delivered after signing an executive order to clamp down on steel dumping, Trump promised action on the files within the next two weeks, and took a swipe at Canada's supply-management protected dairy farmers.

President Donald Trump ratcheted up his criticism of Canada on Thursday, slamming the country for protectionist measures it has taken with its dairy industry that Trump says have negatively affected United States dairy farmers. The efficiencies of the supply chain between Canada, United States and North America make us great competitors with the rest of the world.

Oil set for longest gain since 2012 as Saudis seen extending cut
Brent crude, the global oil benchmark, rose 0.64% to $56.59 a barrel on London's ICE Futures exchange. Demand for oil from OPEC is seen growing by 600,000 bpd from 2016, to 32.2 million barrels daily.

The ongoing trade battle is the result of a Canadian pricing policy that's stopping some imports from the U.S. It's forced a major Wisconsin distributor to announce it will stop buying milk from about 75 farms at the end of this month, many of which now have no other customers.

The U.S. president criticized Canadian policies related to a few industries including lumber, timber and energy, adding that officials will have to get to the negotiating table with Canada very quickly. "The reality on the ground in terms of the political atmosphere that he deals in with Congress and Senate and the reality of trade agreements as they exist".

Trump also said this week he would make "some very big changes" to the NAFTA treaty with Canada and Mexico or "we are going to get rid of NAFTA for once and for all". The file has always been a contentious one, with Canada largely fending off NAFTA challenges launched by the United States alleging Parliament Hill's policies essentially act as a subsidy for domestic producers.
