More Flint residents on the city's water shutoff list

Even after receiving new water lines, Flint residents will be advised to continue using home water filters for at least six months. Like other types of pollution, lead contamination disproportionately impacts low-income communities, and children of color suffer from lead poisoning at higher rates than white children.

In a letter written in November, acting EPA Regional Administrator Robert Kaplan told Mayor Karen Weaver that Jones was concerned "about chemicals being added to the Flint water for the objective of disinfection and corrosion control".

-The state will provide the city with filter replacement cartridges so that residents will have free filter cartridges to use for one year after the replacement of their lead or galvanized steel water lines.

The city is going after residential customers that haven't paid their water or sewer bills in more than a year, and have racked up past due accounts in the thousands of dollars.

The state must maintain at least two bottled water distribution centers until September, but several others will close before then.

"I'm personally not thrilled about their coming to an end with bottled water, but there has to be an end ... that's the only real solution", Mays said.

The State to guarantee funding for seven existing health and medical programs created to mitigate the effects of lead exposure for Flint residents. "But things are going to get better", NRDC President Rhea Suh wrote in a blog post.

The State to fund a pair of extensive tap water monitoring programs, beyond what is legally required under federal law, to test hundreds of homes in Flint.

"The proposed agreement is a win for the people of Flint", Dimple Chaudhary, a lawyer with the NRDC told the Associated Press. "They went to court".

Allen Overton, who spoke on behalf of a coalition of pastors involved in the lawsuit, praised the settlement for finally getting Flint the legal boost it needed to get clean water back. The Department of Environmental Quality failed to treat the corrosive water, which ate into the city's iron and lead pipes, causing lead to leach into the drinking water.

The Flint water crisis began when risky amounts of lead leached out of the city's pipes and into the drinking water of Flint's homes and schools following a decision by Flint and MI officials to use the Flint River as the City's primary drinking water source without first treating the water to prevent corrosion. Lead has been tied to a host of medical problems, especially in the nervous system.

"We took the matter into our own hands", Overton said. But the river water wasn't treated to reduce corrosion.
