Cost-cutting dominates debriefing for Tokyo from Rio Games

Cost-cutting dominates debriefing for Tokyo from Rio Games

Tokyo governor Yuriko Koike, told the meeting that due to the high cost of refurbishing the existing rowing venue, Tokyo had made a decision to stick with plans to build a new one in the capital.

TOKYO (AP) - Discussions of Olympic cost-cutting have dominated a three-day debriefing from organizers of the Rio de Janeiro Games.

In Tokyo yesterday, Dubi said that Sunday in Tokyo that detailed options for moving some Tokyo venues would be presented at a meeting involving the IOC, Tokyo 2020 organisers, the Tokyo metropolitan government and the Japanese government on Tuesday.

Tokyo is eyeing ways to save money after warnings that costs could hit an eye-watering $30 billion - four times the initial estimate and nearly triple that of the 2012 London Olympics.

"I'd like to take some time to explain our current thinking", Koike said at the meeting, which started more than 10 minutes late. "Mr. Coates has said it should be lower and we agree with that". Olympic officials have agreed to keep the rowing and swimming venues at their planned sites in Tokyo for the 2020 Games.

A decision on the volleyball venue, however, was put off after Tokyo Gov. Yuriko Koike asked to postpone it until Christmas, a request that was granted by the IOC.

Koike proposed using the Naganuma boat facility, which she had considered as an option, as a training facility ahead of the Tokyo Games.

"From there we will move to reduce it further".

No. 4 North Carolina beats No. 16 Wisconsin 71-56 in Maui
UW's largest deficit in Maui - a trip that includes wins over Tennessee (74-62) and Georgetown (73-57) - has been two points. Jawun Evans had 30 points on 13-of-25 shooting, but got little help from his Oklahoma State teammates on the offensive end.

Koike said her team needed more time to review the pros and cons of hosting the volleyball in either the yet-to-be-built Ariake Arena or the existing Yokohama Arena.

The tweak will shave 17 billion yen (S$215.46 million) off the venue's original 58 billion yen price tag, she added.

"In the organization in Brazil, a lot of attention was given to cutting costs", said Toshiro Muto, CEO of the 2020 organizing committee.

Even a declaration from IOC President Thomas Bach for Tokyo 2020 organisers to cap total spending at $20 billion (two trillion yen), has sparked fierce opposition.

IOC urges Tokyo to keep costs below $20 billion was posted in Sports of TheNews International - https://www.thenews.com.pk on November 30, 2016 and was last updated on November 30, 2016. Top worldwide and Japanese Olympic officials discussing three expensive venues and cost cutting measures have agreed to keep two - rowing and swimming venues - at their planned sites in Tokyo while making further cost reduction effort, while putting off a decision on a volleyball arena until Christmas. The IOC has not agreed to that amount of money. "We think the operational costs of the Games can be delivered for significantly less than that".

"From the IOC, we want to make it abundantly clear - particularly as we are going into a situation where the 2024 host city will be decided next year - and the global media and the public are scrutinizing these figures very closely".

Koike repeatedly cited the IOC's "Agenda 2020" reforms that seek sustainable Olympics and encourage the use of existing venues, not just in Japan but universally, saying her effort is fully in line with them. However, after concerns were raised that any delay in the start of construction would increase costs, the meeting turned into a battle over the extension.
